When Words Are More Than Words: Imagery and the Spark of
A children's poem, though short and simple, holds tremendous power.
When a child hears the line: “The big water buffalo’s back is itchy, the egret
comes to scratch it,” what do they picture?
A gentle buffalo standing by the field, a light egret landing on its broad back, like
a professional masseuse. In that instant, the child’s mind begins playing a silent
yet vivid movie—full of interaction, sensation, and emotion.
Poetry is the spark that lights up the “mind’s eye.” Unlike a story, it doesn't lay out
a clear beginning, middle, and end. Instead, it opens a space for the child to
freely piece together their own memories, emotions, and creative interpretations.
As a child listens to a poem, they are translating it internally:
Sound → Image → Emotion → Action
Therefore, imagination is Not Abstract—It’s Transformational !
A poem is a doorway; a painting is the world that unfolds beyond it.
From simple verses such as “The great water buffalo’s back is itchy, and the egret comes to ease the itch,” language transcends mere comprehension—it is drawn, it is lived, it is felt.
