When the giant’s eye is watching, what do you think it’s thinking about?
What does the spinning blue area feel like? What kind of feeling or emotion does it remind you of?
Why did the butterfly choose to stop here? What does she like about this place?
Artwork Description and Interpretation
This painting was created by an 11-year-old girl. When she described her artwork, she said:
“It’s a giant’s eye, peeking inside to see what’s in the space. The blue area spins, and it feels like it could pull you in. The butterfly is just resting on a blue rose. She’s not going to fly — she really likes her beautiful wings.”
Her words reveal three layers of inner experience — awareness, being observed, and self-appreciation. The imagery of the painting holds a powerful contrast between motion and stillness: the space being watched (tension and visibility), the spinning blue (emotional movement), and the resting butterfly (symbol of inner self-acceptance).
Symbolism of Color and Space
Blue Rotating Energy: She said, “It feels like it’s spinning and could pull you in.” This seems to describe the deep layers of her emotions and thoughts — a mysterious yet inviting inner vortex. Blue also represents calmness and reflection, suggesting that she is learning to stay present with her inner emotional world.
Dark Brown Framed Space: The clear boundaries of the brown-black space indicate that the child is developing a sense of self-boundary and inner safety. Her ability to place both the “giant’s eye” and the “spinning center” in the same space reflects that she can safely observe her emotions.
The Eye and the Butterfly
The Giant’s Eye: a giant’s blue eye watching into this space. This may represent the feeling of being seen or watched from the outside, as well as her awareness of external expectations.
The Butterfly: She clearly stated that the butterfly “doesn’t want to fly.” This is a key symbol. Though the wings are beautiful, she chooses to rest — expressing her own pace of growth and transformation. The butterfly symbolizes self-acceptance and the ability to appreciate beauty without rushing toward change.
Expressive Arts Reflection
This artwork is a symbolic image of self-awareness and inner balance. Through imagination, creating, and projection, the child brings together both “being seen” and “appreciating herself” within the same space — completing a gentle process of inner integration.
